An architectural engineer is capable of great feats. From incredible building design all the way through to the actual construction, architectural engineers oversee the creation of some of the greatest feats in the world. It is the successful merging of both the creative and scientific. If you think that using both sides of your brain is a good fit for you, then maybe you should consider a career in engineering. Engineering programs offer people the ability to learn how to do something truly incredible. Full-time programs prepare students for the real world, increasing the probability of lucrative employment with both practical and theoretical training. Since not everybody learns at the same pace, experienced professors are available for one-on-one consultations. Students also learn from each other, through workshops and discussions. If one of these engineering technology programs appeals to you, but you lack the proper prerequisites, many colleges have preparatory courses available to potential students. Speaking with an academic advisor can help you narrow down your field of concentration to find the best programs to fit your strengths. All of these concentrations are offered at both standard and advanced levels, should you choose to go further with your engineering studies. Degree options are available - students can complete a bachelor of technology. Generally, an engineering program takes about three years to complete. Once this preliminary degree is finished, there is no limit to where you can take your studies. During this time, financial aid is available to those that need it. This is an especially useful feature if you are already employed full-time, and are considering a serious career change. Many people cannot afford either the funding or the time to enroll in a post-secondary education, due to the obligations of full-time work, and relative expenses. Financial aid is great alternative for those people wishing to change career fields. Greetings reader! I am back to do another installment of my blog. In this post I will be discussing the journey I have taken this semester. I would just like to take this time to look back and reflect upon this journey from novice to "expert." It all started in the first essay where I discussed my general area of interest, mechanical engineering, and what drew me to that interest. My interest in machines and mechanical operations is what drew me in deciding my major, Mechanical Engineering Technology. In the second essay, I wrote about pollution and waste and the effects that they have on the environment. This topic was of great interest to me because I have a love of the outdoors and a respect for the environment and all that it provides. This wanting to protect the environment and wanting to preserve it for future generations is what drove me to selecting what would be my research question.My research question also combined another area that I am interested in, energy production. So naturally, I decided to do research into renewable sources of energy that could some day replace fossil fuels as our main source of energy. From there I did research in to several different sources of renewable energy, looking at their pros and cons, their applications, and the advancements that are being made in their development and production. From this I learned that it will require the use of most if not all of the various kinds of renewable source of energy that there are to replace fossil fuels. Since there are many different uses of fossil fuels, it will require all of the different renewable sources to cover all the areas where fossil fuels are used. This is what I have learn from my journey this semester and I hope to be able to implement this knowledge in the real world someday.

If you are a successful mechanical engineer, then you should know that before you are about to pursue a project or plan, you will need to follow some steps to ensure that it will be successful. In preparing project mechanical engineering is the key to success. Consider these steps the next time you have a project:

1.Select project that adds value.

This means that you have to choose the type of project that has substance. As an engineer, you must choose a project that can increase your potential or interest to many people, or both. Do not choose just any project. Consider how it will affect you in your growth as an engineer and how it will affect other people.

2.Take serious and project implementation.

Once you choose a project, make sure you take to heart. Are your responsibilities seriously so that the whole project becomes a huge success. Being a responsible big no no in your profession. Remember that as the mechanical engineer, anything you do or construction will affect some people.


3.Plan work involved before you start and keep to schedule.

Preparation of mechanical engineering projects require a lot of thinking and careful planning. Make a list of everything that needs to be done, and make a timetable for each. Of course, in order to succeed in doing, you should make sure that you follow the plan to the letter. Doing this will enable you to complete the project within the specified time frame for you.

4.Consult your guide at every level of operation.

It is always a set of guidelines that will determine how you should go about doing things in every project. Every time you would do something big or important, make it a point to consult your manual to see if you're on the right path. This will reduce the likelihood that you fail to another project or made a mistake.

5.Be ready to face the problem.

No matter what type of project you have chosen to do, problems are inevitable. Do not get frustrated every time you strike a problem. Have enough courage and determination to complete the project regardless of the severity of the problems you encounter. Have faith whatever obstacles you may encounter in doing the project, you still have a chance to succeed and finish your business. Believe that you have the potential to complete the work within the allotted time.

As said, in preparing project mechanical engineering is the key to success. No matter what type of project you choose, make sure you take the time to consider all relevant factors. Doing so will prepare you for any obstacles you might encounter when you try to complete your project. With adequate preparation, as well, you can arm yourself with sufficient information about things that are important for completing the project.

Hello reader! In this installment of my blog I will be looking at some of the sources for my up coming research paper and I will state if I agree, disagree, or otherwise respond to the arguments the authors have made in these sources.

Philip H. Abelson argues in his article, "Renewable Liquid Fuels," the importance of developing biodiesel fuels from biomass to take the place of liquid fossil fuels. Abelson's theory of how liquid fuels from biomass should replace liquid fossil fuels is extremely useful because it sheds light on the difficult problem of the world's dependence on fossil fuels and how we need to shift away from fossil fuels and on to renewable sources of energy.

Koji Omi argues in his article, "Alternative Energy for Transportation," the importance of developing new sources of renewable energy for various forms of transportation. Those unfamiliar with this school of thought may be interested to know that it basically boils down to trying to find cleaner, more sustainable sources of energy that can replace fossil fuels as the main source of energy for transportation.

Howard Wolinsky argues in his article, "The economics of biofuels: President Obama's emphasis on energy policy gives a boost to the alternative fuel business in the USA," the importance of energy independence for the United States by focusing on renewable energy sources that can be produced in the United States. Wolinsky's theory that the United States needs to develop new sources of renewable energy in the United States is extremely useful because it shed light on the difficult problem of the United States having to rely heavily on fossil fuels produced in other countries and depending on other countries for our main source of energy.

Mechanical engineering is an exciting program for those who are interested in creating machinery, products and industrial materials. To make it simple, it is fantastic for those who want to make big things that make an impact in every aspect of life.

For a student interested in embarking into the field of mechanical engineering, only the passionate and dedicated students in various fields of sciences will appreciate the rigorous work that has to be done for the subject. It is know that your high school will provide you with the needed tools and skills to choose a degree in college. For mechanical engineering and other fields of engineering, students must attend courses as a preparation to the kind of training and studies they would have to pass for admissions.

Various branches of sciences are included in the study of Engineering. Primarily, you have to get a strong competence in the field of mathematics including geometry, trigonometry, calculus and algebra. Sciences like physics, chemistry and biology have to be studied as well. Aside from these general bodies of knowledge, you also need to get a good communication and technical skills. It is important for an engineer to communicate ideas by word and by drawing and creating specifications.


All coursework and subjects under mechanical engineering had to be accredited by a body that analyzes the degree for its competence and relevance to the ever-changing world. If you decide to take on these studies, you have to study hard and really have fun doing it. You can enter many disciplines when you go for mechanical engineering. You can embark on. There is mechatronics and nanotechnology as examples. These fantastic and exciting new disciplines can really help the world by creating devices and technologies geared towards making the work processes, medical technology and other facets of life easier and more efficient.

As a budding mechanical engineer of the future, you have to take studies very seriously because after that, if you want to be licensed, you have to have a practical application and experience of the work a mechanical engineer does before you can even pass the screenings to get licensure. It might be a long road to be a fully licensed mechanical engineer, but as what we have said, it is very important for you to have fun and just work hard because the discipline of mechanical engineering provides a lot of promise for the future.

A long time ago, a few weeks to be more precise, there was a guy, lets call him Andrew, was sitting in the computer lab in the Classroom Building at Oklahoma State University. He was sitting in front of a computer and he was stressing out. You see he needed to be looking up sources for his annotative bibliography for his research paper but he had not come up with a research question. It's pretty difficult to look up sources for a topic that does not exist so he needed to think quickly. He had a pretty good idea of what he wanted to do for his research question but he was having difficulty putting it into words. Andrew knew he wanted his question to in some way be about renewable energy. He sat in front of that computer deep in thought while simultaneously taking a quick look at Reddit in order to get the creative juices flowing. While looking at pictures of cats and things he had already seen the night before and trying to make it look like he was doing what he was suppose to be doing he had an epiphany. He thought, "with all the different kinds of renewable energy sources, which one the best and will replace fossil fuels someday?" He knew that would be good enough so he decided to go with it. After looking at one more funny picture, Andrew exited out of Reddit started to look up sources on the library's website. He looked up at the clock a realized only a couple minutes had passed since the beginning of class so he knew he would have plenty of time to find the sources he needed.

Yet Another Observation of Research Process

Greetings reader! Welcome back to another exciting installment of my blog. Last time I discussed the research process for my research paper, which is over renewable sources of energy. For today's post I will be discussing, you guessed it, the research process for my paper. But this is the last post about this topic so I believe we can soldier through this last time. I have actually found all the sources I will need for my research paper and last night I finished the annotative bibliography for my paper. The process as a whole was went well, it was not very difficult to find sources over this research topic because it is a subject that has been in the spotlight for many years. From the research I have done, pretty much everything I have read points to needing to find a new source of energy that is not a fossil fuel. The debate it over what that source of energy will be. Some say biofuels, others say wind, solar, or hydro powered. Hydrogen is another possible candidate. All of these different energy sources have their benefits and their limitations so it is hard to say which is actually the best. From what I have learned about these various energy sources is that it most likely be a single one of them that will take the place of fossil fuels on its own. It will have to be a combination of a few or all of them to be able to shift away from fossil fuels. Where one source has a limitation, another is there to make up for it. I am no expert in this field at all but from what I have gathered it is the only viable solution to this problem. This will do it for another installment of my blog. Another Observation of Research Process

Hello reader! Welcome back to my blog. For those who are just joining I will catch you up. Last week I discussed the research process for my up coming research paper. Now that you are caught up I will go into this week's subject, you guessed it, it will be the same as last week's. If this is the first post of mine that you are reading you probably have no idea what I am talking about. The topic for my research paper is renewable energy. Through the research I have been doing I have learned quite a bit about renewable energy, both the positives and the negatives. The research process is continuing to go well and has been very productive. I have collected the majority of my sources for this paper. I will continue to look for more sources to bolster the credibility of my paper and to get all sides of the topic. The topic of renewable energy goes a lot deeper than I originally thought, with many people on different sides. There are also many different kinds of renewable energy, each with its own pros and cons. So far the research process has been going swell and it has been an eye opening experience. I really enjoy learning more about this topic because it is one I am very interested in and it is a field I might go into once I graduate. This is all the time I have so thanks for stopping by. Research Paper Observation

Greetings follower. Welcome to another exciting installment of my blog. In this post I will continue to discuss the progress of my research paper. So far it has been going swimmingly. I have gathered several sources at this point and am in the process of now procrastinating by watching episodes of Justice League and writing this blog post instead of working on my essay three A check point that is due tonight. Luckily I already did the annotated bibliography for one of the three sources so I only have two more to do. How hard could it be? But the research process is going well and I really look forward to getting more into my research topic because I believe it is a very important issue that needs to be addressed. I just know my research paper will be the straw that breaks the camel's back and will get the ball rolling on replacing fossil fuels with clean renewable sources of energy. Crazier things have happened...probably. As I said before the research process is going great and I have gotten a lot accomplished so far and have a good feeling about it. So far I have gotten most of my sources from the online databases provided by the library but I do plan on probably getting some actual text sources from the library on when the other groups are meeting for class. I just want to repeat I will be at the library on Thursday, not sleeping in. Tune in next week for another exciting blog post where I will be discussing something. Good night.

As we design and create machines, it is always an obvious fact that we do not often get it right at the first attempt. With an objective to take on physical load and repetitive work borne by man, we tweak and fine tune to make better machines for optimal performance. When a machine does not perform according to its full potential due to wear and tear, we carry out remedial works to get it back to action. Alternatively, an incorrect fit of task to machine may also be due cause to not meet our expectations. Whatever the cause and reason may be, we need mechanical engineers to handle these tasks.

Since machines exist in all forms and dimensions, a scholar with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering focuses on specialized areas of interest. Whether it is a piece of factory equipment, medical device or small appliance, each provides an opportunity for a mechanical engineer to dabble with. A doctorate holder in the mechanical engineering field is normally engrossed with research work as that is the mainstay of his course work. Depending on his area of focus for his dissertation, he usually pursues further in the same area post graduation. Some may choose to stay within the academic circles and become points of influence within these circles as well as to the marketplace. As they engage in teaching posts to groom future minds inclined to mechanical engineering, it is the hope and dream of every professor to see his student excel and contribute to society in general.


Successful graduates having gained their PhD in Mechanical Engineering are often sought by the industry leaders to join their organizations. Bringing on board their years of research and expertise in various fields, they can hopefully influence the industry towards more innovative methods of machine design, operation and maintenance. Many may be elevated to top management positions, thus providing a lucrative career opportunity and prominence in the market.

Whether this type of postgraduate student seeks fame, glory or money, the underlying goal in everyone who delves in Mechanical Engineering is to make better machines. As such, it is important to always remember this purpose and not exchange it for temporal delights.

Essay 3A Progress

For this post I will be discussing the progress I have been making on gathering sources for essay 3A. These source will later be used in essay 4, which is the actual research paper over the question I have chosen. The research question that I have selected to write my research paper is "Which alternative source of renewable energy will most likely replace petroleum-based fuels in the future?" What led me to establish this question is the fact that I have always been interested energy production and the fuels used. One of the biggest hot-button issues of the last several years has been the effects of petroleum based fuels on the environment. Being very interested in the environment and protecting it for future generations, I care about this issue. So any source of energy that does not have any negative impacts of the environment and that is renewable should be utilized. I believe that we need to determine which source of energy should take the place of petroleum-based fuels because they all have positive and negative qualities so determining which has the most pros verse cons will help to determine which is the best. The databases that I have used turned to to begin my research are Academic Search Premier and ProQuest. From these online databases alone I have been able to find several articles that I can use for my research paper. None of the sources I have selected so far have come from old blog posts or DBQs. But my previous essay is what helped to give me the idea for this research topic only it deals with something I am really interested in. Some comments I have received have helped to point me in the right direction.

This is a summary of an article from Popular Mechanics magazine about the future of the electric automobile by G.E. Anderson.
 In recent discussions of the future of the electric automobile, a controversial issues has been whether
 the technology for electric automobile is at a point where it is a feasible replacement for gasoline powered automobiles. On one hand, some argue that the range of electric automobiles has not increased very much over the last almost hundred years. From this perspective, the electric car is not at a point yet where it would be a realistic replacement for gasoline powered cars. On the other hand, however, others argue that the range of the electric automobiles that can be purchased today is substantial enough for a majority of consumers. In the words of Larry Dominique, one of the views main proponents, "a majority of consumers- around eighty percent- drive less that 100 miles per day." According to this view, the technology for electric automobiles is at a point where people could use them in their day-to-day lives. In sum, then, the issue is whether the technology for electrics car is still not at a point where they are feasible for people to use or if the technology has gotten to a point where they are a realistic replacement for gasoline powered cars.
My own view is that the technology for electric cars is still not to the point where they are a reasonable replacement for gasoline powered automobiles. Though I concede that there will need to be a replacement for gasoline powered automobiles in the near future, I still maintain that the electric cars you can buy today are the answer. For example, battery technology has not advanced far enough to make anything more than just short trips possible in electric cars. They also take a very long time to charge the batteries in electric automobiles. Although some might object that battery technology will improve and there will eventually be quick-charge technology, I would reply that battery technology can only improve so far and that quick-charging substantially reduces that life-span of the battery pack to the point where it has to be replaced altogether, and they are not cheap. This is an important issue because with the ever rising price of oil there will need to be replacement to petroleum based fuels in the near future. But with the way things look now the answer is not electric automobiles.

Your skill yet? I think we all want that space in life that just seem to fit perfectly. Now I'm not just talking about the woman and the family aspect, but also on the side of the race. You know, what would you do for a living? This is a question that is often difficult than easy to answer. Well, not with a society lady, the only shops all day like Paris Hilton. If I had to choose a job to do over the next 40 years, what would it be? Well, I can give examples, some being ungrateful. What about a career in medicine, law, or maybe teaching? Then there are many jobs in mechanical engineering. Each area of engineering for the company's worth. Are you aware of all the jobs available for someone with an engineering degree? The lists go on and on.

Have you thought about jobs in mechanical engineering or electrical engineering? These fields are very prominent throughout the country. In fact, my wife is a chemical engineer and enjoys her work tremendously. One thing is clear to me when I finished school and was looking online is that all openings in several states. I speak of the chemical, process, quality, software and electrical engineering positions, not to mention all the mechanical and engineering works. There was literally no end to be worth in this area. It is not only a wonderful area to participate in the case of career options, but is also beneficial affects income. They know that many engineers begin? Otherwise, I think it's time, he jumped online and found. You do not need to practice medicine or to the right to a decent income.

The Mechanical Engineering Technology department at Oklahoma State University has several professors with many years worth of experience in their respective fields. Each professor in this department has a specific field that they specialize in and many of them have contributed research to their fields. These professors are:

Dr. James Bose, who is the head of the department. His interests are mainly in energy conservation and specifically ground-source heat pump technology. He has authored several design and installation manuals for ground-source heat pump systems. He works extensively with research agencies, manufacturers and contractors, and lectures extensively on energy conservation and the benefits of ground-source heat pump systems.
Dr. Richard Beier, who has acquired 18 years worth of industrial experience with Conoco Inc., the DuPont Company, and the Factory Mutual Research. He has performed research and published in the ares of petroleum reservoir engineering, radiation heat transfer, convection heat transfer, fire research, combustion, ground-source heat pumps, building cooling loads, and applications of fractals.
Ken Belanus, who has worked as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Technology at the University of Pittsburgh, Halliburton Energy Services, Tenneco Oil Company, and Texaco Inc. before coming to OSU. Currently he teaches statics, dynamics, strength of materials, instrumentation, heat transfer, finite element analysis, and senior design projects.
Dr. Young Bae Chang- his current research areas include air-floatation and guidance of thin films, fluid-structure interaction, flow-induced vibrations, and fluid power control. Some of his publications include: "Flow-Induced Vibrations of Free Edges of Thin Films" in the Journal of Fluids and Structures, "Aerodynamic Characteristics of Pressure-Pad Air Bar" in Transactions of the ASME, Journal of Applied Mechanics, and "Interaction of Fluttering Webs with Surrounding Air" in the TAPPI Journal.
Dr. Chulho Yang- has performed research and published in areas of linear/nonlinear mechanical system identification, vibration and acoustics, experimental embedded sensitivity analysis, structural health monitoring, diagnostics and prognostics of mechanical system, design optimization and automation. He teaches all of the design classes so he specializes in the topic I am most interested in.

I always knew that one day my skills as a Redditor would be put to good use. All the time that I should have been studying or working on homework but instead spent it surfing Reddit was not a waste and it has prepared me for this moment for this class-required blog post. So take that society! For those unfortunate few who have not had the chance to experience Reddit I high recommend taking a look. Once you look past all the pictures of cats and reposts you will find a thriving community. Reddit is made up of a countless number of what are called "subreddits" and theses "subreddits" cover just anything you can think of. Members of Reddit post to these "subreddits" and other members can either up vote or down vote a post. You can also comment on posts and have "discussions" with one another. But most of the time it ends up being a long string of puns, which are usually hilarious. You also have the ability to up vote or down vote comments and they are listed in accordance to the number of up votes they get. Recently the President of the United States, Barack Obama, did what is called an AMA where people, are able to ask questions and whoever is doing the AMA, usually famous people, answer these questions. There were so many people that viewed this that it crashed to website for a short period of time. I have been a "lurker" on Reddit for many years and have been a member for over year now. I'll let you know that I personally have 27 link karma and 2 comment karma, which I am very proud of.

I could talk for hours about Reddit, which shows how much of a personal life I have, but that is not the point of this blog post. The particular "subreddit" that most closely relates to my field of study is r/engineering. And here is a link http://www.reddit.com/r/engineering. Here people can post questions they have about engineering or have discussions or anything interesting that is relative to the field. One post is a link to a website called techcrunch.com and the article has to do with a new electric motorcycle created by a company called Lit Motors. It is called the C-1 and according to them it is "untippable" It is the world's first gyroscopically stabilized, two-wheeled, electric vehicle. The initial price is going to be around $24,000 and it is set to release in 2014. It is expected to top 100 mph, has an estimated range of up to 200 miles, and will go from 0-60 in around 6 seconds, which is faster than most cars.

I hope I have been able to give you some insight into the world of Reddit and if you have some time to kill, a lot of free time, or no personal life I recommend you take a look. A word of warning: it is very addicting and easy to get caught up in it, especially if you have the Reddit Enhancement Suit with never ending Reddit turned on.

"Waste Not, Want Not"

The article that my group was assigned to read was "Waste Not, Want Not" by Bill McKibben. In this article McKibben discusses the idea of waste and not just waste as in trash. He talks about how we waste all kinds like resources, money, time, and human potential. Some statistics that he provides are pretty startling; for example Americans discard enough aluminum to rebuild our entire commercial fleet every three months. Another one he provides s that we toss fourteen percent of the food that we buy at the store. These were just a few of the examples that the author provides that help to show that our wasteful habits are having a major effect on our planet and on us. The author believes that the only way we can possibly fix the predicament we are in is to return to the idea of "Yankee frugality" where we could not imagine wasting money on ourselves and make do without. Other than that the author really does not provide any other potential ideas on how we can solve the problem caused by our wasteful ways.

Now after reading this article there were a number of questions that could come up that are hinted at but not necessarily commented on in the article. These questions include:
-Are humans wasteful by nature or is it a modern problem?
-What can be done to cut down on waste?
-How can Americans get back into being "famously thrifty"? As the author of the article claimed.
-Where do we start cutting back?
-What will be the catalyst that starts this change?
-What will be the result if we do not change?
-What has and can the government do about this situation?
-What effect does population have on the amount of waste produced?
These are just a few examples of potential questions that one might have after reading this article. In engineering, one of the main goals is to cut down on waste: time, materials, labor just to name a few. Engineers want to stream line their processes as much as possible in order to save, most importantly of all, money. The more you cut down on time, materials, and labor the more money you can make.

The Edmon Low Library at Oklahoma State University is an amazing resource that is available to the students of OSU. The Library has a vast selection books spanning a variety of different subject matters so there is going to be something there for just about everyone. It is also a great place if you need a quiet place study or work on a paper or project. Once you finish that paper or project you have access to free printers so not only is it convenient its a great way to save money. But one of the best resources the Library has to offer is its website. Not only does it provide links to information on its website but also a variety of different online databases which are great resources to have at your disposal. It is also possible to narrow your search to your specific major or subject of study. My major, Mechanical Engineering Technology, falls into the Engineering Guide which covers pretty much all of the Engineering majors. The web address for this site is http://info.library.okstate.edu/engr. The librarian that is dedicated to helping students doing research on this subject is Kevin Drees. The homepage itself is pretty straight forward, there are tabs labeled Books, Articles, Standards, Technical Reports, Patents, and Keyword Alerts and EndNote. There is something called Library Chat which allows you the chat with people about how awesome the Library is or something like that. There is also information about the librarian and a picture of him so you know what he looks like if you ever need to look for him. There are links to a variety of different Engineering related websites and there is a feed to CNN.com- Technology to help keep you up to date about the wonderful world of technology. Under the Articles tab there links to online databases that include Compendex, Inspec, and Web of Science.  There are also links to more generic online databases like Academic Search Premier. This website has proved to be a valuable resource to have at your disposal and one that I will be using quite a bit from now on.

I am majoring in Mechanical Engineering Technology. When I tell this to people they always ask whats the difference between that and regular Mechanical Engineering and the best way I can describe it is in MET there is more of a hands on approach than regular ME. So MET courses usually involve more actually working with the different machines, equipment, and programs used in various manufacturing and design processes in the real world. Regular ME is more focused on theory and therefore is much broader. This is why MET is much more appealing to me because I prefer to work with my hands and to get into things to see how they work. I also chose this major because it is a very extensive field with many different job opportunities. At this moment I am leaning more to the design aspect of the field and possibly going into the automotive industry. I have always liked cars so I would really like to get a job in either the design or manufacturing process of the automotive industry. Professionals in this field discuss things like how can this product be produced faster? Is this the most cost effective to manufacture this product? How to cut down on material while retaining structural integrity? Such this is vast field with many different professions to choose from there is an endless number of questions that are discussed. If I do go into the automotive industry the contribution I would like to make is to help push the advancement of alternative fuel vehicles, whether it be hydrogen, electric, or bio fuel. I would like to be able to say I helped to make the gasoline powered car obsolete. If I could have any part in that I will be happy.
